Believing is Seeing

Reaching for the sun Reaching for the son Reaching for the song In order to be sung. I was on retreat at the Downing House with the staff of Mile High Ministries where I have served as their chaplain now for over ten years. I love it here. Though we are in the midst of the city of Denver, the Downing House offers a quiet, peaceful, secluded respite for a much- needed time for renewal and rest. During the day, we had time set aside for a contemplative walk. It was in the low 70’s; the sun was out in the midst of our blue skies. It truly was heavenly. Our purpose on this walk was to find the one thing which grabbed our attention and sit with it as our meditation focal point. After centering ou

Gray Skies

Spring is the most fickle of all the seasons. We just had four beautiful days of sunshine and 65 degree temperatures. And now, as I sit down to write, I’m staring at grey skies, next to my winter coat because it’s barely above freezing. Maybe it has something to do with the anticipation and expectations of what is to come. As though one sunny day tricks us- at least me- into believing that they’ll all be sunny days from here on out. And even as I type that, I realize how unrealistic it is. I always push myself to take advantage of sunny days— go outside, plant something, ride your bike, cook dinner on the grill— truly anything outside to soak up the sunshine. But what if I thought about gray

Winter to Spring

One of my favorite passages of scripture comes from Ecclesiastes, chapter three which begins, “For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.” As I type these words I can hear the musical rendition sung by the Byrds playing in my head. Classic 1960’s genre. Good stuff in my humble opinion. Anyway…we live in Colorado and I love the different seasons. I really do. BUT…when we get three of the four seasons in the same day it is a little overwhelming. Yesterday it was 69 degrees. Today the high will be a skooch over 40 and tonight…the dreaded four letter word…SNOW. Ugh. Baseball season started yesterday, it is time for spring! I’m seriously over winter. I just realize

Wild Yeast

“The Kingdom of God is like the yeast that a woman used in making bread. Even though she put in only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.” My adventure with wild yeast started years ago when my daughter wanted to bake bread with a wild yeast starter. To create a starter, you must first collect some wild yeast. Yeast lives everywhere: on plants, in flour, in our homes and on our skin. I suggested she use organic grapes for the yeast source. Getting a starter going demands intensive timing and once started requires regular feeding to keep it alive. Eventually I inherited it and began learning to relate to a live organism that marches to its own drumm
